Black Cat Costume and DIY Tutu for Toddlers and Baby Girls

My little kitty cat was so cute this Halloween! I wanted to try my hand at an easy DIY costume for Evelyn rather than buying a pre-packaged option, so I decided on a black cat costume. Mostly, so that I could make her a tutu for twirling. She loved spinning around, meowing at everything, and even crawling at times! She played her cat role very well.

Evie wore the whole getup three times! Once to try it all on at her Gigi’s house after I completed the tutu. The second time was at our local zoo’s Halloween event. The final time was for our neighborhood’s regular trick-or-treating hours. I have to say, watching a two year old partake in trick-or-treating is magical. She ran from door to door, said “trick-or-tweeeeet” in a sing-songy voice, tried to take way too many pieces of candy from each person, and said “thank youuuuu” quickly before turning and running to the next door. My husband and I were cracking up, it was so ridiculously adorable!

Since then, she has been lining up her candy and asking us what each piece is by holding it up and saying “what does this mean?” for each and every piece, over and over again. She has no interest in eating her candy because each piece is like a little treasure to her. Seriously, my heart has been melting all week long!

Okay, on to the DIY tutu tutorial. Here’s what you need to make your tutu…

DIY TUTU SUPPLIES |

  • 1 – Black satin ribbon (1.5 inch width)
  • 2 – Black matte tulle (6in x 25 yards)
  • 1 – Silver glitter tulle (6in x 25 yards)
  • Scissors & Tape
  • Something that is thin and about 8 inches in width, like a toddler puzzle board or a piece of cardboard to wrap the tulle around.

INSTRUCTIONS |

  1. Take your ribbon and wrap it around your little one’s waist leaving enough extra ribbon to drop to the floor on each side and cut it. This is so you can have a nice big bow!
  2. Tie two knots designating the size of your child’s waist, so that you know where to tie the tulle and the knots also help keep the finished tulle in place.
  3. Tape one end of your tulle to your board or cardboard and wrap it around and around until you reach the end of the spool. I used all three spools to make Evie’s tutu because I wanted it to be nice and full.
  4. Cut the tulle at one end of the board  and you’ll end up with a pile of 16 inch strips of tulle. Do this for each of the three spools and you’ll have all your pieces ready to go.
  5. Layer three pieces of your cut tulle. I layered three black pieces to start and tied them onto my ribbon.
  6. Fold your tulle in half, make a loop under your ribbon, and pull the other end of the tulle through to tie it securely on the ribbon. I pulled mine tight.
  7. Layer three more pieces but this time use two layers of black with one layer of silver in between. Repeat step six and alternate between all black and black mixed with silver until you complete your line to the other knot.
  8. Shake it out a bit to fluff it up. Go outside if you can because the glitter gets everywhere! And taaa-daaa, you’re done!

COMPLETE THE LOOK | Here are links to the other items I purchased to complete Evie’s black cat costume:

I also used my black eye liner to draw on whiskers and pink lipstick for her kitty nose. She loved her costume! I’m definitely going to make similar tutus for more upcoming occasions!
