Let’s get this building process started! Of course, I’ve been scouring Pinterest for home decor and design inspiration even before the thought of building a home entered my mind. When my husband and I decided to move back to our hometown and build a house, I immediately started pinning away and honing in on our ideal look and feel for a family home. (Follow me on Pinterest here and read more about why we moved here.)

I looked over my Pinterest boards and, of course, noticed a general theme. To help me stay focused when it comes time to choose finishes, I put together this home inspiration board to see the overall design theme I desire. I’m going for a modern farmhouse feel with plenty of white and gray, but adding in warmth through wood and oil rubbed bronze fixtures and hardware. I’ll be sprinkling in brushed nickel and galvanized steel as well, as I love mixing textures and colors. I’ve always said, “It doesn’t have to match, it just has to go.”

Let’s back up, to how we got to this point in the building process…

We researched and decided on a builder in our area. We chose and tweaked our home plan throughout the summer, adding in all the upgrades and features we could think of before applying for our loan. We applied for a construction loan through our bank and got approved. We chose and purchased a lot in a beautiful country subdivision. We closed on the construction loan just this week after the sale and closing of our home back in Madison was complete.

Okay, back to this week… This week we need to choose the major exterior finishes as we break ground NEXT WEEK! We have to choose the siding, the roof, and the stain color for the entry way pillars and gable. We are loving dark gray wide plank siding for the majority of the house with matching cedar impression siding on the peaks to shake up the texture. All the corners and windows will be trimmed in white. The roof will be a brown/gray color that will coordinate with the medium brown stain we want on the entryway woodwork. Eventually, we will also have to choose the stone that will trim the bottom of the house and anchor the entry way pillars, as well as the garage and entry doors.

We are so excited to break ground and keep rolling with the design choices! Any advice as we chug along on this home building journey? I would love to hear it in the comments! What do you think of our design inspiration board?

  1. how exciting. building a house is definitely on our bucket list. welcome back to the area- i’m always looking for other moms to hang out with 🙂

  2. I love all of the stuff in the picture. Just what I am looking for as we are getting ready to build! Do u have a list of the colors/brands shown?

    1. I don’t! I just pulled together photos of what I wanted to try to match. As I go through the building process I will post the colors and brands that I choose along the way! It’s so fun to design a new home!

    1. I put this post together using imagery that inspired me, but it was before I got into specifics, so I didn’t actually capture any of the colors. Just the images. I ended up using Sherwin Williams Mindful Gray as an accent color and First Star for most of my walls. Then just a put white with no tint for everything white.
