Lighting! This was probably one of the areas of the house that took me the longest to figure out because just when I thought I was done, I realized there were more lights to pick out. It is super strange and FUN to pick out every single light for your entire house all at once. It can seem overwhelming at first, but when you’re working with a budget, the field of choices get narrowed down for you.

I did splurge on a couple lights but, kept the overall cost low with the rest of my choices.

We did not want standard builder grade lighting. My last house was filled with “boob” lights and I swore I wouldn’t have any in my new house, and I don’t! Below are all the lights in the interior of our new home.

We went with mostly oil-rubbed bronze fixtures throughout the house, but I like mixing metals and I also have brushed nickel lighting in my bathrooms. The kids bedroom fans are also unique as Evie’s is white and Levi’s is black!

  1. I read in your “What to expect” posts that you picked out some of your own things with your builder allowance, such as lighting. Did you find that some of your selections were less expensive than the builder’s options (also curious about non-lighting items, too, like the vanities)? How did you go about this — did you look at their selections / pricing first and then look on your own or just look for yourself from the start? I’m enjoying your building process posts as my husband and I are just at the very start of planning for a build too! Thanks 🙂

    1. Hi Kayla! I asked my builder how much our allowance was for lighting and vanities. It would have been cheaper through him and I would have gotten very basic and not my style lighting that I would have wanted to change out. Your builder will either have a stock of lighting they typically use or they will have a vendor they work with at a discount for you to shop at. I just opted to do my own shopping at a variety of stores. Lighting was very important to me as it’s the “jewelry” of your home! I also wanted free standing vanities rather than built-in. I was able to get more high-end looking vanities on my own then through our builder’s supplier. Some builders aren’t as flexible as mine was though! He was so easy to work with and still manage the install process of my finds.
