Evelyn loves to help out in the kitchen. Whenever she sees mom or dad cooking or cleaning she pushes a chair over and has to be right in the action. This weekend, we celebrated her second birthday, (I can’t believe my baby is two years old!) and decided to make Muddy Buddies together to share with her friends at the party.

I love getting her involved as much as I can so that she can learn about cooking and cleaning, but also about having fun and spending quality time together while doing it. Of course, we had to have a little fun with the powdered sugar! She thought it was hilarious to wipe it on mom and dad’s noses! We laughed and shared in the silliness together.

I measured out the ingredients for the Muddy Buddies in advance and Evelyn helped me pour it all together. Of course, she had to taste test the chocolate chips to make sure they were yummy enough for her friends. While she held onto a handful of chocolate chips, I added the rest to a bowl with the peanut butter and regular butter and melted them using the microwave.

I like to clean while I cook so that I don’t get overwhelmed with a big mess at the end. While the chocolate melted, we took a few minutes to wipe up the powdered sugar that we got a little crazy with. I had two Scotch-Brite® Scrubbing Dish Cloths on-hand for each of us. I found them during my last Target run and conveniently enough they come in a two-pack. They are a new product and come in gray, mint, coral, and navy for just $4.99. I like them because, one, they come in fun colors and, two, they have non-scratching scrubbing power, making them gentle enough for noses, but powerful enough to clean up the mess we left behind.

After our gooey mixture was melted, I stirred in the vanilla extract and Evelyn watched me pour it over a large bowl of rice squares cereal. We dug in with our hands and mixed everything together getting chocolate all over our fingers! We added in the powdered sugar, put a lid on the bowl, and shook it all up. Ta da! Our Muddy Buddies treat was ready for party time. I wish I could say the same for my kitchen, but we had some work to do there.

Even on her birthday Evelyn learned some important lessons in the kitchen by helping make a fun, but messy recipe and cleaning up during and afterwards. At her party later that day, she was so proud to share the Muddy Buddies treat that she helped make!
