In honor of National Ice Cream Month and in remembrance of Evelyn’s Grandpa Denny, we threw ourselves an ice cream celebration out on our front porch. My family is a little obsessed with ice cream, okay, A LOT obsessed! It’s one of our favorite summertime treats and with good reason. Living in the dairy state of Wisconsin, it’s common to have some sort of family tie to a dairy farm. For my family, we have plenty of ties to diary farms, but one that we particularly identify with is the line of milk truck drivers in my husband’s family.
Jeremy has fond childhood memories of riding along with his dad and grandpa in the milk truck. He has told me time and time again about how he used to drink freezing cold milk right from the tank before collection. With milk being a main ingredient in ice cream, you better believe that they were all ice cream lovers as well.
Evelyn was only about a month old when we lost Jeremy’s dad to cancer, so we like to keep his memory alive in the little moments we enjoy together as a family. Food is often tied to family traditions or memories, and for us ice cream will always bring happy memories of Grandpa Denny. As we share these bowls of ice cream, it’s not just a treat, but an opportunity for us to remember a good man and share with Evelyn those fond memories of her Grandpa Denny.
Grandpa Denny’s one true love was traditional vanilla with potato chips on top, but we love trying all different flavors of ice cream. Our mood seems to change every time we have ice cream and we often times grab out several tubs to satisfy all our cravings. Jeremy chose Kemps Caramel Cow Tracks, while Evelyn and I shared our bowls of Pecan Turtle Trail and Double Caramel Cookie Crunch.
Evelyn honored her Grandpa Denny by finishing off a scoop of her ice cream out by the tree we planted in his memory. It was just so nice to enjoy the cold, yummy ice cream while savoring the sweetness of family memories.

This is such a sweet post! I love how you can connect enjoying a bowl of ice cream with such a great family memory! Ice cream is definitely my favorite dessert! I think I may have to try vanilla with potato chips!
I might have to try it myself!
That marker by the tree is so beautiful and such a wonderful idea. And honoring him with ice cream is just about the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard! <3
Seasonal candy cane!
I love everything about this post. What a great tribute to Grandpa Denny!
I’ve never had Kemps Ice Cream myself but your photo of the Pecan Turtle Trail looks pretty dang good to me!
I have fond memories of eating ice cream with my grandma. We always put the pink and white frosted animal cookies on top of vanilla. My current Kemps favorite is Moose Tracks!
Mmmm I love Moose Tracks too!

This is a very sweet post. I enjoyed reading it and how cool that he will always have those memories! Ironically my fondest memories of my grandfather are of him making us ice cream with his hand ice cream maker. Was always so fun!
What a cute post! I loved everything about it!
Light moose tracks!
I would love to try goo goo clusters!
I am most interested in trying their marshmallow and brownie variety. I had no idea that they had so many varieties. I maybe see a quarter of those in my local stores.
It really depends on the store I’ve seen! Crazy huh?!
I don’t know if I my store has this flavor, but I’ll be looking for Green Bay Packer Salted Caramel Frozen Tundra Twist on my next shopping trip!
I’ve had a bunch of my family members say the same thing! GO PACK GO!
Oh what a great idea on the tree in his memory! I remember the milk truck coming to our house growing up. Such beautiful memories!!! I would love to try their Classic Chocolate Cupcake Ice Cream! Chocolate cupcakes and ice cream….what could be better? 🙂 They all really look good!
Kemps was always a more expensive brand, but when our family did buy it, we ate Moose Tracks. I’d also like to try Pumpkin Pie!
We love cookies n cream 🙂 we love ice cream nights!
