THE BOOK | The Magnolia Story
MY REVIEW | I finished this book in just a few days you guys! I was hooked the moment I started reading it. I’ve been a fan of HGTV’s Fixer Upper since the first season it aired. There’s something charming and inspiring about Chip and Joanna Gaines. They have crazy success, live a wholesome life, and focus on their family. When they announced they were coming out with a book, I put it right in my Amazon cart to purchase when it became available.
Their story is both cute and inspiring. It was interesting to get to know how they met in a tire store and how they started their business together before receiving a call from HGTV, which changed everything. The one thing it didn’t change was their focus on family and raising their kids. They live out on a farm with hundreds of animals and enjoy outdoor living. And even though they likely make a killer living they still live in an old farmhouse that’s only 1700 square feet with their four kiddos. Mind you, it’s a gorgeously designed farmhouse.
It was inspiring to read about their meager beginnings and the trial and error they went through before making it all come together. It’s even crazier that Joanna became the designer she is today just through her own eye for design. She was a journalism major (like me!), not a design major. She truly taught herself to design spaces on her own and learned to trust her instincts.
If you like Fixer Upper and you haven’t read this book, you should. The story about how they landed their TV show is hilarious. They basically thought they weren’t going to get the show until the camera crew caught Joanna’s reaction to a ridiculously huge purchase Chip made without telling Joanna first. Their personalities finally came through after days of awkwardness in front of the cameras. One of Chip’s biggest mistakes was likely the reason they landed the TV show that turned them into household names.
Seriously, go read this. You’ll love it!
