I love the idea of advent calendars as a way to countdown to Christmas! Give the gift of reading as way to celebrate the holidays together and begin a new family tradition. Begin by gathering up all the Christmas books that your family already owns and purchase a couple new ones until you get to 25 books. Until then, just start the tradition with the number you have. Your countdown can really start any day before Christmas.
Christmas Book Advent Calendar Idea
- Gather all the Christmas books you already own and purchase a few new books! (Shop my Christmas book list on Amazon here.)
- Pick out cute wrapping paper, like this adorable Hearth & Hand gift wrap I found at Target. While festive red and white twine makes it easy to tie a number onto each wrapped book. You can use the tags over and over again every year! I purchased these wooden tags on Amazon and used a gold Sharpie to write the numbers.
- Start your countdown to Christmas or Christmas Book Advent Calendar on the corresponding date to how many books you own. Or go to your local library and add enough to make up the 25 until you build up your own collection.
- Place the books in a basket like this woven one, or under your tree. The kids can grab one gift and unwrap it each night before bed, so that your family can enjoy reading a book together every night leading up to Christmas.
- Kick off the first night with new pajamas or slippers for the entire family. Matching Christmas jammies make it even more fun! Cook up a batch of hot cocoa with candy cane stir sticks and you’ve got yourself a family tradition you and the kids with cherish forever!

We added Pick A Pine Tree and The Nutcracker to our book collection this year. The pop-up Nutcracker story is one everyone can enjoy! Make sure you read it early on in the month so that you can have it out as a tabletop book for the rest of the holiday season. Another favorite of ours is The Reindeer Wish and, of course, The Night Before Christmas (which will be given number 24 for obvious reasons, ha!).
