My husband and I have always loved exploring and traveling, especially our own beautiful state of Wisconsin. I decided to start a fun little series called Explore Wisconsin on my blog so that I can share a few of the spots we visit, so that you too can check them out or be inspired to explore your own state. You don’t have to go far to enjoy the benefits of traveling and discovering new places.

HORICON MARSH

CLICK FOR MAP | Horicon Marsh is a national and state wildlife refuge located in both Dodge and Fond du Lac counties.

What’s it like?

Horicon Marsh holds a special place in our hearts. Its nearby where my husband grew up, and he brought me there when we first started dating. I think it was maybe our second date, but it’s the spot where we took our very first picture together. Today, it’s the perfect location to go for a family walk along the boardwalk that travels over the freshwater cattail marsh. There are other walking and driving trails as well, but our favorite route is strolling along the boardwalk, looking for geese, ducks, birds, turtles, and other wildlife that have made the marsh their home.

I just found out that there is a Visitor Center with a Children’s Discover Area that’s open daily. You can check out more about that by visiting the Friends of Horicon Marsh website here. We are planning on taking the kids there the next time we go! It looks so cute!

Where to eat?

Bring a Picnic | Pack a family picnic and make an afternoon of it. No kids? Pack a Wisconsin cheese board with your favorite local cheeses, crackers, grapes, olives, and a fresh baguette to make it a date.

Guth’s Candy | We love this little shop located nearby in Waupun, WI. It is a local chocolate shop that has handmade novelties like popcorn, candy, and ice cream. You can also grab a delicious coffee or espresso drink and shop around their gift shop.

Tom Dooley Orchards | This cute apple orchard and bakery is only open from August through the end of November, but if you’re visiting the Horicon Marsh during that timeframe, it’s a fun spot to stop. We love grabbing fresh apple cider and caramel apples in the fall, or a batch or their apple cider donuts! Mmmm!
