Making your own DIY balloon garland for a party is NOT THAT HARD. I was ready to buy a DIY Balloon Garland Kit online, but it’s pretty easy to grab your own supplies and really make it your own for much cheaper! Either way, you have to put it together yourself, so you might as well save some money. I was so happy I gave it a shot! It makes such a HUGE impact for a party table.
Here’s what you need to do to make your own DIY Balloon Garland…
DIY BALLOON GARLAND SUPPLIES
- Balloon Decorating Strip
- Balloon Hand Pump
- Balloons of choice (I used a total of 42 balloons to make mine!)

DIY BALLOON GARLAND INSTRUCTIONS
- Start by blowing up all of your balloons and tying them off. Blow them up in differing sizes.
- Then simply insert balloons into the holes on the decorating strip. Leave some hang room on either side of the strip just in case you need it to help you hang the garland. Sometimes I skipped a hole or two to make bigger balloons fit. There’s not an exact science to this, just start pulling your balloons through and see how it goes. You can always remove or add balloons if you need to.
- To create my rainbow balloon garland, I used one color at a time and put one confetti balloon in between a few of the colors.
- Once finished cut your balloon decorating strip from the roll, leaving about a foot just in case you need it to help you secure it to the wall.
- To hang, secure three 3M hooks to the wall in the pattern you want it. Because the balloons are so thick, I tied three pieces of twine (about 2 feet in length or less) to the balloon strip and then tied those to the hooks.
It took me about two hours to put this DIY Balloon Garland together, so give yourself ample time. I wouldn’t try to conquer this the day of the party. I created mine the night before and you could even do it 1 or 2 days before as the balloons hold up well.
I took the below picture a couple weeks after the party was over! The balloons filled with humidity in our hot garage giving them a hazy look, but still looked cute until I finally took it down. I’ve seen people hang these up in their kids bedrooms above their beds for a few weeks to keep enjoying them even after the party is over!
Let me know if you have questions! I’d be happy to answer them. Or tell me if you tried this DIY Balloon Garland Tutorial out for yourself! Enjoy! 🙂

Love this idea! I plan to try one for my daughter’s graduation! Thanks for sharing!
It was actually a lot of fun to see it come together!
Such a cute and inexpensive party decor idea!
Especially if you grab the the balloons for like a buck a bag!
Great idea! Will be trying this for my daughter’s 3rd birthday. Any tips on hanging the balloons when the garland is complete?
It’s so much fun! I just put two 3M hooks on the wall but the balloon tape didn’t reach with how fatty the balloons were so I tied to piece of twine on to the strip and tied that to the hook!!! I should add that to the post! I only had to use too hooks for my look.
Hi. I have a question, How do you secure to the wall¨? Thank you
Hi! To hang, secure three 3M hooks to the wall in the pattern you want it. Because the balloons are so thick, I tied three pieces of twine (about 2 feet in length or less) to the balloon strip and then tied those to the hooks.
How long before the party did you do the Garland? My sons party is one Saturday I wanna start it sometime before so I have enough time
I made mine the night before! This thing has staying power, but at the most I’d do it the day before or if you had to 2 days before. Store it inside otherwise the balloons will gain humidity and not look as fresh. 🙂 I’d love to see yours done!
Having a party for my grandbaby out side temperature in the high 80’s will this affect the balloon garland?
My party was mid July and hot too when these photos were taken. They end up looking a look a little foggy after a while from the humidity but it will still look good!
