My favorite perch this time of year is our backyard covered patio. We have it setup like a cozy living room with a modern patio design. I love how the sun rises and streams through the trees and onto the porch. We have a small raised covered patio that we have all of our soft seating on. I chose black, white and neutrals colors for the decor, so that the landscaping can serve as the colorful touch.
The anchor of our modern backyard patio design is, of course, the outdoor rug. You just simply can’t have a living room without a rug to pull the space together. I’ve had this Rugs USA Modern Minimalist area rug for a few seasons now, and it still elevates the space. It is durable and hides any dirt that the kids bring in from all their outdoor adventures. It cleans up really well and dries quickly. I especially love that I can have a touch of modern luxury at an affordable price.
Make sure to check out the Rugs USA Memorial Day Sale. It’s the perfect time to get incredible savings on the rug to pull your outdoor space together.
I also have two different sizes in the Natural Jute Decorative Circles rug. I use the 4′ round version under my slim modern egg chair to add another layer of texture beneath the furniture. I have the 6′ round size in my entry way and it’s lovely! Check it out a photo of it in my space here.
My small, yet cozy modern sectional sofa is no longer available but I’ve linked a few similar ones here, here, and here. Adding black and white pillows offer even more comfort and texture to the space. The black wired round coffee table is actually an indoor piece, but I covered the wood top in a clear wood sealer so that I could keep it on my patio.
My key to a lush patio is plants, plants and more plants. When we built this house I had a lot of fun designing and planning the landscaping. Every year, I add even more planters filled with mostly different shades of green plants. I use a lot of large ferns and even houseplants that I bring into my home once the fall arrives.
A modern farmhouse outdoor fan serves to keep both the heat and the birds away from our patio. I love the gentle hum and light breeze it provides on a hot summer day. The cafe string lights exude a lively ambiance in the evening. You can read just how we hung the string lights here. We have an old dining room table that has served us well over the years underneath the swaying lights.
My wish list includes replacing the well worn in dining set with a set up modern black Adirondack chairs and a large round fire table. I would welcome the warmth it could provide on a cool evening or evening a round of s’mores for the family after dinner.

Sarah, your modern backyard patio design is stunning! I love how you’ve created a cozy living room atmosphere outdoors, and the use of black, white, and neutrals for the decor is so chic. The outdoor rug really ties everything together and adds a touch of luxury to the space.
The idea of using different-sized rugs to layer and add texture is great. I also love the idea of using an indoor coffee table with a clear wood sealer. I have got one in mind!
Thanks for sharing.
